Parkinson's and Premature Ejaculation
Some Parkinson's medications could be causing your PE.
A recent study suggests that men who take certain medications for Parkinson’s disease are more likely to develop premature ejaculation. Which medications caused concern?
Men who take medications for Parkinson’s disease might develop premature ejaculation (PE), according to a June 2018 study.
PE occurs when a man climaxes before he wishes to. He may feel like he has no control over when he ejaculates. The situation can be frustrating for both members of a couple.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurological movement disorder that occurs when nerve cells do not produce adequate amounts of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Symptoms include tremors, stiffness, and poor balance.
Sexual dysfunction is a common problem for men with Parkinson’s, affecting an estimated 41% to 52% of men.
For the study, researchers described the cases of eight men with Parkinson’s who sought help for PE from a sex therapy clinic. The men’s average age was 63 years.
The men were diagnosed with acquired premature ejaculation. This means that their symptoms occurred after a period of normal ejaculation. (Acquired PE is in contrast to lifelong PE, which starts happening with a man’s first sexual experience.)
All of the men were taking medications to treat Parkinson’s disease when their PE symptoms started “abruptly,” the authors said. The medications included levodopa, dopamine agonist, rasagiline, amantadine, and an anticholinergic drug.
This finding suggests that the medications and PE onset could be related. However, the men had had Parkinson’s for an average of four years before their PE symptoms started, so it’s possible that the progression of the disease lead to PE.
The authors recommended further research with a larger group of men so that clinicians can learn more about this possible relationship.
The study was published in the International Journal of Impotence Research.

More Information on Parkinson's and PE
Sexual dysfunction is common in men with Parkinson’s, affecting 40.6-51.5 percent of them; however, these issues have not been studied in detail. Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation are the predominant forms of sexual dysfunction in this patient population.
The case series described eight men followed between 2008 and 2014 who attended a sex therapy specialist due to a new onset of premature ejaculation.
Patients’ mean age at Parkinson’s onset was 57.3 years and 62.6 years at study inclusion. Half had normal ejaculatory function before Parkinson’s diagnosis, while the remaining four experienced ejaculation within two to three minutes, though not regarded as problematic.
All patients reported a significant reduction in intravaginal ejaculation latency time (the time taken for a man to ejaculate during vaginal penetration) after Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Three patients experienced severe premature ejaculation, meaning that ejaculation occurred before penetration, while four reported ejaculation immediately following vaginal penetration. In addition, erectile dysfunction and/or altered sexual desire occurred in some of the patients.
Of note, all patients were taking anti-parkinsonian medications at premature ejaculation onset, including levodopa in two patients, dopamine agonist in three, and both in one patient. Azilect (rasagiline), amantadine, and an anticholinergic medication were also used.
Are "off label" drugs used for Premature Ejaculation a good idea?
Well, that’s a tricky question. Most men would say that using a prescription drug for something it wasn’t intended to treat is not a great idea. Anti-depressants have been shown to have some use in treating premature ejaculation – however most people would rather avoid taking an anti-depressant if they’re not actually depressed.
In addition, most of these pharmaceutical drugs come with a number of side effects – some of which can be quite serious. One possible side effect of anti-depressants is erectile dysfunction – or the lack of ability to achieve an erection for intercourse. This obviously makes these drugs a questionable choice for improving sexual function.
An alternative treatment for improving sexual stamina is the growing popularity of herbal premature ejaculation supplements. Among these natural premature ejaculation remedies, Prexil is one of the most popular – and that’s because we’ve created a product that works extremely well – WITHOUT any negative side effects.
Is Prexil a drug for premature ejaculation?
While Prexil has shown to be an excellent supplement to eliminate premature ejaculation – Prexil IS NOT a drug. Pharmaceutical drugs are a very specific type of medicine which is used to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease – and they can only be prescribed by a doctor.
Premature ejaculation is a condition – not a disease – and there are currently no pharmaceutical drugs which have been effective enough to gain FDA approval as a premature ejaculation treatment. Natural premature ejaculation treatments however, have shown to be extremely effective in curtailing premature ejaculation and improving sexual stamina and vitality.
Why do premature ejaculation supplements work? Well, the good ones work because they use carefully selected formulas comprised of potent herbs used for centuries due to their sexual enhancing qualities.
Many herbs such as L-Arginine, Damiana, and Ginseng – to name a few – have shown in many studies to increase sexual stamina, improve erectile blood flow, and improve several aspects of male sexual function. That’s why top selling premature ejaculation supplements contain these and many other herbs known to improve sexual function.
Before you decide which kind of premature ejaculation treatment is right for you, it’s important to try and determine the underlying cause of your premature ejaculation, as many things can influence or cause premature ejaculation, and premature ejaculation supplements will not necessarily be appropriate in some instances. There are several different factors which can help to cause early ejaculation in men.
Problems that contribute to Premature Ejaculation
You may be at a higher risk of premature ejaculation if you have experienced occasional or consistent problems in getting or maintaining an erection.
Fear or anxiety associated with “losing your erection” may cause you to hurry through sexual encounters.
If you have chronic or serious pre-existing medical conditions, this can be another leading cause of early ejaculation. Conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease may make you feel nervous or anxious during sex and may unknowingly be causing you to rush to achieve climax as soon as possible.
As noted previously, many researchers believe that low serotonin levels in the brain and/or neurotransmitters can be a primary cause of premature ejaculation. This is why anti-depressant medications (SSRI’s) are often prescribed for off-label use as a treatment for premature ejaculation. The most effective premature ejaculation supplements are those that contain ingredients focused on increasing male serotonin levels.
