Premature Ejaculation Medication
Updated - June 6, 2016
Is there a Premature Ejaculation Medicine?
What medicine is there for premature ejaculation......and where can you get it? Well, the first thing to note is that there is no approved prescription medicine for premature ejaculation at this time.
There are some sprays that can be used to help stop premature ejaculation, although most of these are not pleasant as they "numb" or "freeze" the penis - numbing sensation and making the man last longer during sex. Unfortunately, many of these sprays and gels also rub off on the woman's vagina and can make sex less pleasurable for your partner as well.
There is one premature ejaculation spray that is actually FDA approved, called Promescent. This product works like other numbing sprays, which is to say it is a topical spray that you apply onto your penis 10-15 minutes prior to sex. It can be helpful for some men, although most men don't really enjoying "numbing" their penis prior to intercourse, which is totally understandable.
Sex is supposed to feel good - and taking away pleasure and sensation to make it last longer seems somewhat counterproductive in our opinion, which is why we developed Prexil premature ejaculation pills - in effect to fix premature ejaculation from the inside out - instead of the other way around.
Basically, premature ejaculation is "uncontrolled" or "unwanted" ejaculation which occurs either before or shortly after penetration. It happens with minimal sexual stimulation and before the person (or their partner) wishes. Premature ejaculation usually results in unsatisfactory sex for both partners. Additionally, PE can increase the anxiety of having sex, which usually adds to the problem and makes matters worse.
Generally premature ejaculation is more common in men under 40 - however premature ejaculation affects men of all ages - and can present itself in men who previously have had no problems with early ejaculation. Premature ejaculation can cause serious problems in the relationship - not to mention a very unfulfilling sex life.
What Causes Premature Ejaculation?
What causes premature ejaculation? This is a very good question - however there is no simple answer to this query. The exact cause of premature ejaculation isn't known. While it was once thought to be only psychological, doctors now know premature ejaculation is far more complicated and involves a complex interaction of physical, hormonal, psychological, or biological factors.
Quite often with sexual experience and age, many men often learn to delay orgasm through various behaviors, techniques, or tricks. (Remember Austin Powers - "think Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day!") Premature ejaculation may occur with a new partner. It may happen only in certain sexual situations or if it has been a long time since the last ejaculation. Psychological factors such as anxiety, guilt, or depression can also cause it. Premature ejaculation can rear its ugly head at any time, and many men suddenly find themselves battling premature ejaculation after several years with no PE problems at all.
Is Dapoxetine a drug for premature ejaculation?
Yes, Dapoxetine (sold under the brand name Priligy) is in fact a drug that's available to treat premature ejaculation - the only problem is that Dapoxetine is only available in Europe, and has been denied FDA approval on several occasions - so it seems unlikely that Dapoxetine will be available any time soon in North America.
Dapoxetine is in the SSRI family of drugs (Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) and is essentially an anti-depressant that was 're-purposed' when it was discovered that patients taking this drug for depression noticed they could last longer during sex while using the anti-depressant. Unfortunately, like most drugs, Dapoxetine can also have many negative side effects - one of which is that Dapoxetine can lead to loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.
As we mentioned, while Dapoxetine is actually a medicine for premature ejaculation, it is not available in the USA or Canada, and even if it were - it wouldn't be the best choice for a lot of men. Dapoxetine can have many side effects such as erectile dysfunction, loss of libido, nausea, dizziness, headache, and diarrhea. Dapoxetine can work for some men - but often times the 'cure' is worse than the condition.
There are however, several natural or 'Ayurvedic' medicines for premature ejaculation that can be extremely effective for stopping premature ejaculation. While Prexil is just one of these natural treatments for premature ejaculation - it is also one of the most effective, and that's what has made Prexil one of the best-selling premature ejaculation treatments in the world.
Before you decide which kind of premature ejaculation medicine is right for you, it's important to try and determine the underlying cause of your premature ejaculation, as many things can influence or cause premature ejaculation, and premature ejaculation drugs will not necessarily be appropriate in some instances. There are several different factors which can help to cause early ejaculation in men.
Problems that contribute to Premature Ejaculation
Erectile Dysfunction. You may be at a higher risk of premature ejaculation if you have experienced occasional or consistent problems in getting or maintaining an erection.
Fear or anxiety associated with "losing your erection" may cause you to hurry through sexual encounters.
Health Problems. If you have chronic or serious pre-existing medical conditions, this can be another leading cause of early ejaculation. Conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease may make you feel nervous or anxious during sex and may unknowingly be causing you to rush to achieve climax as soon as possible.
Low Serotonin/Testosterone. As noted above, many researchers believe that low serotonin levels in the brain and/or neurotransmitters can be a primary cause of premature ejaculation. This is why anti-depressant medications (SSRI's) are often prescribed for off-label use as a treatment for premature ejaculation.
